A summary of Cappella-Gloriana performances going back to 1996.
Here we see the group practicing in the Stadtkirche of Gehren Germany.
Cappella Gloriana is the collaborative brainchild of its co-directors, Stephen Sturk and Virginia Sublett. Their idea was to bring together their professional colleagues, soloists with a passion for choral music, and promising young singers in an a cappella ensemble devoted to the performance of the finest and most demanding choral repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day. Its initial performances took place in the summer of 1996. The group has been an active part of the San Diego vocal music scene ever since.
The choir collaborates with internationally exhibited Carlsbad artist Gerrit Greve for two concerts called “Sacred Images: Illustrating in song the paintings of Gerrit Greve”. The artist will narrate a slide show of his works as the choir performs motets from the Renaissance to the present day. Among Greve's hundreds of painting are depictions of the passion of Christ, Noah's ark, angels, the Tree of Life in the garden of Eden, the Virgin Mary, the wood of the cross, spiritual dreaming and vessels used in religious observances.

Cappella Gloriana celebrated its Tenth Anniversary with a concert at St. Andrew's on Sunday, March 19 at 4 p.m. The choir was co-founded by Virginia Sublett and Stephen Sturk (former and current St. Andrew's music directors), and its first concert took place here at St. Andrew's in 1996. To mark the anniversary, Virginia Sublett returned to San Diego, and performed with Cappella Gloriana in some of its greatest hits from live concerts and recordings over the last ten years. A champagne reception and fundraising “live” auction (benefiting the Choir) followed the concert.
Five singers from Cappella Gloriana made the choir's official debut in Mexico in a concert of Renaissance music. The concert was part of a five-month international festival on the history of music, sponsored by the government of Baja California (Instituto de Cultura de Baja California) and by the Mexican government (Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes). Cappella Gloriana's five men performed three pieces by Tudor composer William Byrd including his “Mass for Three Voices”, and three works by Thomas Tallis including the “Lamentations of Jeremiah”.
Cappella Gloriana appears on the church's prestigious Music Series, performing music of Arvo Pärt (celebrating his 60th birthday) and Jack Gottlieb (celebrating his 75th birthday), along with Palestrina's “Missa Brevis” and Monteverdi's “Magnificat á 6”.
